- Listen to Your Audience: I love using surveys, polls and discussions to capture the true voice of your target audience. You can use this information as the basis to create new content that you know they will want since it came from their on words. For example an open ended survey or discussion question like, “What social networking automation programs do you use to help streamline your social media marketing activities?”, will provide content that you can use to create a multi-part article series on “Automating Your Social Media Marketing 101″. (feel free to use it if you like
). - Toot Your Own Horn: Don’t be shy. Make sure your network knows if you are recognized for any award large or small as well as any interviews or guest invites you may get. It tells them you are a sought after expert that needs paying attention to.
- Create Reference Material: This is a great way to add value to your consumers. Create and eGuide (formerly known as ebook), whitepaper or report that provides golden nuggets of information your prospects can use and apply right away. It could be free or fee. They key is to ensure it is something your audience truly needs and not just “fluff” to get people to give up their email or cash to you. Also, another great thing to do is to embed worksheets and video tutorials to supplement your blog articles
- Make it a Series: This is perhaps my most favorite part of content marketing! by breaking up a meaty topic into a multi-part audio, blog or article, you can create content that naturally patterns your audience to hunger for what’s coming next. It will also provide you with a head start on producing other content for release. There is so much “win” with this strategy, it’s hard to list them all in this article, so maybe I’ll create a series on how to create a series…see how that works?
- Stay Visible and Exist to Solve Problems: The key is to stay active in the networks and forums you are a part of. The more they see you the more they will marry you to their mental Rolodex of people to contact when I get to point X or when I have the money to solve this problem or even better… now! This shows prospects that you are willing to help and guide and not just hammer them with offers and sales pitches. It communicates a genuine care to improve there lives and build a real relationship.
- Identify your passion and step boldy into your voice. Don’t let the virtual thing fool you. Stepping out online is a scary thing. Remember when you were in school and you didn’t raise your hand because you wanted to wait for someone else to ask your question? There are hundreds and thousands of people who have the problem you exist to solve and there are just as many who also want to solve them. No one can say it or deliver it like you. And when you do, you will soon find people will be attracted to the integrity of your messaging.
- Create content that people can use. Think beyond articles and even videos. What can you add to make your content more sticky? Now more than ever, people need more than a great lesson, they need a way to practice and lock in what they learn. So, maybe create a workbook or blueprint that accompanies your article or video. This content marketing idea blueprint can help you get started.
- Use social media to engage more people. If you are struggling with knowing what to say in your social networking communications, you are not being YOU. Social media is simply an opportunity to connect and build of your core message. It allows you to break free from the salesy confines of your website and meet people where they play. So, if you are stuck, just be curious and get noticed by supporting the conversations of your ideal clients. It’s a great strategy for getting on their radar.
- Snyc your message to your offerings. Selling is the transfer of emotion. People make buying decisions based on emotion. Therefore, your marketing content should speak to the emotional senses of your audience. bring your personality to your marketing. Make if fun and relatable so a real connection can be made. Content Marketing isn’t about the hard sell. It’s about creating an atmosphere where prospects get to know, like and trust you without the wall of resistance. It is creating a relationship through providing content that they can apply to the problems in their lives.
- Stop talking about your product/service and start educating your audience about how the features of your offerings help them become, better, smarter or more profitable.
- Use surveying tools to uncover the pains and challenges of your market.
- Find out what content vehicles your market prefers (i.e. written, audio, video).
- Make your content “sticky” by ensuring you always present relevant and usable content.
- Create a plan for incubating and producing solutions. This could be as simple as publishing a survey at the beginning of the month and re-purposing it as a solution by the end of the month. be sure to take into consideration the restraints on your time, financial and support resources.
- Create sales pages that capture their pains in their own words
- Create email campaigns that inspire clicks
- Create info products that provide the results they are looking for
- Create a blog that draws hot and ready leads
- Publishing blogs, videos articles and audios with no call to action
- Having no plan for consistent and strategic social media presence
- No email follow up sequences in place
- 50 percent of blog readers said they found blogs useful for purchase information.
Blog readers trusted relevant blog content for making purchase decisions more than content from social networking sites. - For those who have found blog content useful for product decisions, more than half (56 percent) said blogs with a niche focus and topical expertise were key sources.
- What are the ways blog readers make use of the information? Use it to discover products and services (17 percent). Refine their choices (19 percent). Decide on a product or service (21 percent). Get support and answers (9 percent).
- Twenty-five percent of blog readers say they trust ads on a blog they read. Nineteen percent say they trust ads on social networking sites.
Escape From Manic Marketing: Develop an Internet Marketing Plan for Your Online Business
January 11th, 20112011 is the Year of the Plan! Too many online business owners are floundering in the winds of effective internet marketing. They are so many people with valuable solutions to provide but because they are enamored with the bells, whistles and promises of technologies and gurus, most simply fade into the background and become internet wallpaper.
The first thing new and stuck webpreneurs have to understand is, many web moguls we admire hopped on the internet marketing train in its infancy and were able to make a lot of money simply by being first movers in their markets. However, over the last few years the internet marketing field has exploded and many webpreneurs are struggling to carve out a place for their brand message can be heard and received. The problem is, most of them are simply “copycat marketing” instead of practicing only those strategies that work best for their target audience.
Perhaps the biggest problem I’ve observed as an online business manager is the lack of planning that goes into many online businesses. You can have the best business coach in the world and come away with confidence and ideas to get your business in profitable order. But, if you don’t have a plan that anchors you and maps out your direction, you will spin your wheels and get nowhere fast!
If you find yourself lost in the pack, here are 4 ways to use a marketing plan to rock your online business to profitable recognition this year.
Step 1: Create a marketing plan for your online presence.
The first think you need to do is invest in getting a marketing plan done. There are a few ways to do this. If you are the Do-It-Yourself type, the Marketing Plan Pro, Powered by John Jantsch’s Duct Tape Marketing , is an excellent solution for you. It’s not only inexpensive, but it offers step by step guidance and examples on how to get a plan done quickly and start executing. Another way to approach this is to find a coach or consultant who specializes in creating marketing plans. You might want to try your local chamber of commerce. Many offer free or discounted business planning and development resources to members and non members.
Step 2: Activate Your Marketing Magic.
Once you have your plan done, it’s time to start putting it into action. If you are strapped for resources, try using the Duct Tape Marketing principles to gain momentum until you can hire additional resources to get you moving faster. Another option is to hire a virtual assistant or online business manager to execute your plan. When you have a marketing plan in place, it helps your team and you move in sync. Without a plan, you may find that you are operating in a space of “hit-or-miss” that will inevitably land you in manic marketing trouble.
Step 3: Work It.
Once you have a plan in place and have identified resources for helping you implement it. Now, it’s time for you to work what you’ve got! Don’t aim for perfect execution, especially if you have limited help resources. Aim instead for a slow and steady approach, finding the rhythm that works for your current goals and resources.
Step 4: Measure.
Of course no marketing plan or strategy would be complete without measuring your efforts. It doesn’t have to be complicated at this point. Don’t get paralyzed by trying to create an elaborate spreadsheets. Start by simply visiting weekly or monthly, those places where you are focusing your marketing energy. Got an ezine? How many people are subscribing, un-subscribing and opening your eZine? Use Google Analytics to track how many site visits you get and analyze how the traffic is translating into sales. Start with what’s the least overwhelming and work your way up to tracking everything. The key is to develop the consistency and the system and build growth upon.
This article highlights simple steps you can take to insure the viability of your online success against manic marketing mayhem! Next, we’re going to take a look at how creating a marketing calendar will help make your new marketing makeover easy.
Escape from Manic Marketing Series
January 4th, 2011Is this You?
You’ve spent thousands of dollars on live events and coaching programs that teach you the ins and outs of Internet Marketing. Your brain overfloweth with knowledge. You know what to do, you just cant figure out how to fit the puzzle pieces together to effect. You and your team seem to always be in a crunch to get things out and to your dismay you can never attract the interest you desire. In fact, instead of getting clients and profits you are getting more frustrated and frightened that this isn’t going to work.
Back Away from the Panic Button
Many online business owners panic when sales are slow or the bank account is low and decide to jump into some sort of marketing binge. However, these efforts rarely work, not as a long term strategy at least. The key to escaping the manic marketing trap is to convert your actions into a regular program of activity.
The Myth of the Magic Marketing Pill
I think by now we know that there is no magic pill or one size fits all solution to marketing your business successful. What is proven is that if you move with laser focus on your marketing activities consistently, you will gain more control over your marketing and be able to identify what strategies are working and which aren’t.
In this article series, we’re going to explore the pitfalls of what I call “manic marketing” and highlight some specific things to do to become more proactive instead of reactive in your marketing efforts.
In the next article I’m going to discuss how creating a marketing plan will give you the most powerful tool you’ll need to escape from your manic marketing madness.

Twelve Gifts of Content Marketing Series#01: Customer Intimacy
December 7th, 2010Marketing is all about knowing your customers. By being close to the customer’s hearts and knowing what their pains are, you can benefit by providing information in order to meet those needs. Don’t talk to them like a salesman delivering a sales pitch– always talk to your customers like they are your friends.
One of the most important gifts you can receive from implementing a Content Marketing Strategy in your online business is the gift of customer intimacy.
What is customer intimacy?
Wikipedia defines Customer Intimacy as, “a concept from marketing, which describes the ability of a supplier to become accepted and known as the regular partner with its customer.”
It essentially means that you and your customers develop a co-creator relationship in crafting the solutions you provide.
What does this look like?
Let’s say you create a survey/poll. Respondents that identify with your questions will complete your survey. You take the results and create a teleclass providing answers based on the results of your survey.
You asked them, they told you, and you created a custom fit solution that sells itself.
Whether the solution you offer is for free or fee, you will have successfully created a bond that will position you as someone to seek out when they need solutions.
Here are 5 Key Strategies to creating customer intimacy with content:
The Gift that Keeps on Giving:
One of the by-products of getting your customer’s feedback in their own words is you can more easily speak their language when you are developing promotional content. We know that sometimes it can be difficult to get out of our own heads and speak to the heart of our prospects and clients.
Here are a few examples of ways you can use the feedback from your surveys:
And I am sure there are tons more. Now that we’ve opened the gift of customer intimacy, let’s rip into the next package in this series…

Twelve Gifts of Content Marketing Series
December 6th, 2010Tis the season for some gift giving. But, make sure your business doesn’t get left out by giving your business the gift of content marketing.
Here’s the scoop…
Content marketing is Awesome! Why am I so in love with content marketing? Well, other than the fact that I am a complete “nerd”, it adds tremendous fire power to your business.
Many webpreneurs are intrigued by this form of marketing, but get turned off by the work up front. But, true success is in the plan, not in the fast trends that is so widely promoted these days. Web business owners have to embrace the fact that we’re all publishers of content. And ultimately, people who fight it eventually give in due to fatigue and poor results. Well written articles, cool video and convenient audios will create credibility and attract a diverse flow of hungry to buy prospects.
Content Marketing provides you with the gift of multiple assets with profit generating potential. My goal is to make every webpreneur fall in love with content marketing too! So, without further adieu…
Here are the twelve gifts of content marketing that every online business owner should be thankful for:
#01 Customer Intimacy
Every online marketer knows that marketing is all about knowing their customers. By being close to the customer’s hearts, and by knowing what they their pains and challenges are, you can gain an advantage by providing information that meet their needs. Don’t talk to them like a salesman delivering a sales pitch– always talk to your customers like they are your precious friend.
#02 Creates Community
A solid Content Marketing strategy helps you produce a message that rallies strong connections, relationships and friendships across the globe, on a variety of platforms: Facebook, Linked-In, Twitter and other forums. Let your prospects count the ways they love you!
#03 Builds Influence
Your brand will increase influence in your market through a unified and compelling online presence. You will be respected by your customers and by your competition by publishing remarkable content with tremendous benefits.
#04 Profitable Progress
At the end of the day, you want to sell—and you will be more successful when people can come to know like and trust your offerings. Content Marketing allows you to hop off the last minute marketing bus and onto the profitable progress train. You’ll be able to move forward instead of circling the wagon of un-profitability.
#05 Become an Author
Content marketing makes an author out of you! One of the cool things about working from a content marketing strategy is that it’s makes it easy to become an author. Because you are releasing a steady stream of content each month, you could have your book done in a year or less. To make it even easier, try to publish content around a central theme each month. That way, each month can represent a chapter. Twelve months equals twelve chapters. An attractive way content marketing can unleash the inner author in you and give you something you can leverage over and over again.
#06 Meaningful Communication
There is an art to communicating online. It’s not one sided, it’s a two way street! Consumers are in control of the messages they allow into their experience. That’s why it’s important to create a two way conversation with your audience. Show them how important their results are to you, not just how great your product/service is. If you can successfully communicate real meaning, you can make real money!
#07 Loyal Customers
Keep your customers by satisfying them. Provide truthful and helpful insights, tips and information. Constantly update by providing fresh and new content as often as possible. By doing so, your customers will come back again and again.
#08 Platform for Advocacy
Online marketing gives you a channel to broadcast your own thoughts and opinions regarding an issue. It’s a great avenue to voice and share your thoughts to others in order to influence and advocate causes you believe in.
#09 Focus and Purpose
Content marketing allows you to be focused on what your company intends to do. For instance, if you are selling dog food and supplies, focus on writing articles on dog care, food and maintenance. You no longer have to share knowledge on unrelated issues and topics.
#10Competitive Advantage
We are all content marketing. You’re either doing it blind or strategically. It takes planning. And since most webpreneurs aren’t fans of strategic planning, odds are, your competition isn’t using a content marketing strategy. This means you can really position yourself competitively and emerge as THE EXPERT in your industry.
#11 Become a blessing to others
You got in this business to improve or change the lives of your clients. Content Marketing gives you an opportunity to provide a preview of the value prospects can get when they become customers. Give them advice and guidance as a trusted authority and friend. Your influence will make them wiser in choosing products and doing things the right way.
#12 Work life balance
This is the stuff entrepreneurial dreams are made of! By planning and automating your content, you put yourself ahead of the marketing grind, so you can focus on the things in your life and business that matter most.

The Music of Online Business Series: Baby You Can Do it Take Your Time Do it Right…
November 12th, 2010One of the things people are often surprised to learn about me is that I used to write R&B songs. I’ve written for some artists you’ve never heard of and some you have who never heard of me..hehe. Nevertheless, I come form a love of music and entertainment so, everything I do is colored with that.
I thought I’d share this song in the Music of Business Series to act as a soundtrack for those of us who are stuck, frustrated and overwhelmed in our online entrepreneurial endeavors. It seems that many people are experiencing, what I consider to be “blowback” from operating in a month-to-month marketing habit. Rushing aimlessly through a launch, will not always translate into more sales. However, it can translate into more stress and dissappointment. So, let this sink into your spirit (while you dance a little bit too!). Take a step back, lock the doors and unplug the phone and plan your way to the success you desire. Enjoy this music of your online business tune!
Online Content …This is the Song that doesn’t end.
November 9th, 2010Sing with me…
I need content, he needs content, she needs content, we need content, would you like to have great content too?
What can you do without great content?
I’m waiting…
Not much, at least not if you are trying to grow a “hungry to buy” following online.
The fact is that what you really need to create a true presence of authority online is to have a content marketing strategy that supports the products and services you offer. Now, I know that this sounds painful, given all the other “fill in the lank” marketing activities you are involved in. However, without a content marketing strategy in place, you will find yourself struggling to keep up with the content demands of your business. Let’s take a quick look at the huge benefits you can reap from employing content marketing in your business.
Skyrocket your visibility: I know you have been trying to do this. But somehow you are falling flat. What makes content marketing such a solid process is in the planning. In order to be successful online you have to plan for it. A great content marketing plan incorporates written and multimedia content streams designed to allow you to meet potential customers where they play. That is, by posting different content in a variety of places, you have a lil’ sumptin’, sumptin’ for everyone to love.
Get back to loving your business: Yep! I said it. It’s okay. I know you really want it to work, but maybe lately you have had your head stuck in the virtual sand of tools, tactics and gurus selling you pie in the sky without any implementation help….
breathe…
…that you have not really been feeling the passion that got you started in this game in the first place. Content marketing gives you back to your business by putting you ahead of your marketing. Which brings me to my next point…and it’s a biggie….
REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR BUSINESS: Have you ever heard of someone who grows up in dysfunction and chaos living with those same repressive conditions in their adult life? Yeah, don’t be that person in your business! I have found strangely, that although the idea of having the freedom to focus on the big business growin’ ideas and client getting fun is what every entrepreneur says they want, they can’t seem to let go of the bad habit of last minute marketing. Content Marketing allows you a way to escape this money and energy draining trap and allows you to automate your business that gives you relief from say….trying to write and send that launch email at the last minute or worst yet, not at all because you forgot to push the button (at 12 in the am).
Get all the money on the table: Or, at least create opportunities to do so. Some of the ways people leave money on the table are:
Ouch! You don’t even want to travel down the path of trying to figure out how much money you missed- because people came across your content- but were not directly called to come to your site where your services live.
So, let’s skip that shall we?
We’ll just assume that you have learned a valuable lesson and will move to fix it by getting yourself a brand new shiny content marketing strategy.
Content Marketing for webpreneurs is here. It’s time to get in the game. The advantages of content marketing for webpreneurs are tremendous. But possibly, the best news for you is….most of your competitors are either clueless about its powers or not willing to do it.
So, what will you do with this information? Hopefully next time you’ll be singing a new song with me, something like “make money -money, make money- money- money!

Blog Much? Why Blogging is the Best Way to Attract Clients and Cash to Your Online Business
October 26th, 2010Blogging to make money online? How can a solo online business owner pounce on this opportunity?
There are a number of ways to make money online with blogging. I know when many solo webpreneurs think of juggling the writing of articles , blogs, social media posts, and creating other multi media channels to increase visibility, it causes instant creative paralysis. It makes your head want to explode. However, there are some major benefits to be gained if you can wrangle some of these platforms and use them effectively in your business. One such way is learning how to use blogging to get more traffic and sales.
Now, unless you are an author by trade, coming up with fresh and engaging blog posts two-three times per week can seem a bit intimidating. However, it may be one of the best ways to get people to notice you above your competitors.
I came across a post by Francois Muscat who sites some interesting research numbers from a study conducted by BuzzLogic/Jupiter Research. The study polled “2,000 online consumers found that blogs were a prime influencer of purchase decisions“.
Here are some of the results Muscate highlights from the study:
It’s clear by looking at the numbers that a consistent and well written blog will garner the know, like and trust elements needed to drive visitors to buy from you. Because of the perceptions of overwhelm when it comes to blogging, many online business owners skip it altogether and jump right into social media and get frustrated with lackluster results. If you ever wondered why that is, maybe these numbers provide some “ah ha” moments for you.
Not only is blogging key to the obvious benefit of helping to boost your search engine positioning, it is imperative in establishing credibility, conversation and connection with your visitors. In addition to influencing consumer’s buying decisions, it also arms you with a content marketing arsenal that can be re purposed into other forms to increase your reach and influence.
Another important take away from the study is the fact that “blog readers trusted relevant blog content for making purchase decisions more than content from social networking sites”. A key indicator that we need to be strategic in employing social media into our marketing mix. If most consumers look to social media to converse verses looking for products or services, perhaps the best strategy is to talk to consumers in social media and inform them on your blog.
As you evaluate your marketing activities and their ROI, make sure you consider how blogging to attract clients will fit into your overall strategy!

10 Reasons You Should Be Using Content Marketing in Your Business
October 20th, 2010Content marketing more than anything is considered as “THE” marketing strategy of today. Not only does it address the need of businesses to acquire and maintain a HOT consumer base, thus driving profits, it also fills the need of consumers for relevant and valuable information that help them take informed profitable action. If that hasn’t convinced you enough on the merits of content marketing here are 10 reasons why you should be using it in your business.
1) To Establish Yourself as a Credible Expert
Content marketing thrives on the creation and sharing of valuable and relevant information to a defined consumer base or prospective consumer group over a period of time. The keywords here are valuable and relevant, two things that distinguish content marketing from interruption marketing which it has taken over. By repeatedly providing information that’s relevant both to your business and to your customers, you gain the reputation of being an expert in the field, greatly benefitting the credibility of your brand.
2) To Make it Easier for Customers to Trust & Buy
Content marketing goes beyond giving a sales pitch into providing information that your customers actually want to know. By moving away from the traditional way of marketing that is full of interrupting strategies such as advertisements, you set your business up to be accepted more by consumers because the information you provide makes them feel like they know your brand well thus developing trust.
3) Provides You an Opportunity to Educate Your Customers
An informed customer makes better purchasing decisions making content marketing a win for both of you.
4) To Escape the Month to Month Marketing Trap
Most online business owners get so wrapped up in the technologies that support their marketing efforts, that they don’t have time to focus on the big picture. This puts you in a “last minute” planning cycle where things are put into motion without a proper strategy in place. A solid Content Marketing strategy provides you with cushion. It gives you a way to accomplish all the awesome ideas you want to implement but takes away the stress and panic of trying to do it all at once and blindly.
5) To Create Content that Drives Customers to Act
Content marketing enables you to present vital information about your product and the need for it without coming off as if you’re selling it. This sharing of content establishes a connection with customers that breaks down sales resistance.
6) To KNOW your customers want, needs and pains
Content Marketing promotes real conversation. It, more than any other medium represents what the web 2.0 movement is all about, a two way communication. When your prospects don’t feel like they are being sold but nurtured, they will drop their objectivity and more willingly engage with you and your message. Helps to create products people will buy if they are telling you what they want, right?
7) To Stop Wasting Time and Money
Content marketing adapts your business to consumer attitudes and preferences of the here and now. People want information and they know how to get it. So stop wasting your time on ineffective advertising strategies that people tend to ignore nowadays.
8) To Get Of f the Internet Marketing Merry-go-round
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” ~Albert Einstein. Isn’t that where most webpreneurs find themselves? Spinning your wheels trying to get somewhere with no real compass to get there is just insane. Content Marketing stops the merry go round and puts you on a real path to success.
9) To make Developing Products & Services people want easier
Content marketing establishes a connection between your business and customers that is built on the trust that you are also after the interest of the customer more than just making a profit. This makes it easier for customers to give feedback on the products and services that you offer thus making development of these things more customer-centered and less of a guesswork.
10) To Achieve the Success and Impact your desire
Content marketing is the here and now of marketing. Traditional marketing means no longer work effectively because people now have a better knowledge of what they want and they know just how to get it. By adopting content marketing to your business, you allow this shift in consumer attitude to work to your advantage, ensuring the success of your business venture.
